Upcoming Occupy event

April 18, 2012 2 comments

Join the Collective for Social Change and participants from Occupy Denver for a discussion of the Occupy Wall Street Movement and what it has to do with you.

On the Auraria Campus, North Classroom 1130 from 3:30 until 4:45 on Thursday

This panel discussion will be pragmatically focused with plenty of time for audience interaction, questions, and discussion and a special focus on what the Occupy Movement has to do with the higher education system.

Among the topics that will be covered:

–What exactly has Occupy accomplished?
–How does Occupy Denver “work” internally? network with outside groups? connect to national movement? For ex, with respect to the upcoming May Day – May 1st general strike and celebration at the Denver Civic Center?
–How can I study online and learn about the Occupy movement … in Denver and across the country?
–How can I get involved in specific working groups and actions of Occupy Denver?

As we move toward the National May Day – May 1st General Strike and celebration, don’t miss out on opportunities to learn and have some fun! Join in our growing and expanding and spring re-awakening!

The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate how the medium of digital stories can be use to help build a movement. In this workshop, I will talk about key elements in digital stories and why they are useful for activists. Using a digital story I made about the wages of home aids who help people with disabilities as a jumping off point, we will discuss how digital stories can be used for other social justice issues. Hosted by Katrina at 2pm on Thrsday in the Tivoli Multicultural Lounge.

Self-determination is a cornerstone of the entire concept of human liberation. Using the complete inversion of self-determining rights codified in the recent United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a lens, we will examine the extent to which we’ve lost our collective sense of this core principle, and what is need to restore not only our understanding of its meaning but of its proper place in our struggles for social, economic, and political justice. Led by Ward Churchill, at 10am on Wednesday, April 10th during the Art of Social Justice Conference. Don’t forget your program!

NAKED! is a celebration to raise awareness for men and women who have been victims of rape or domestic violence. Most times when a person has gone through these tragedies, the main thing that is attacked is their sexuality. Rather it is through rape or domestic violence, a healthy acceptance of sexuality and self love is the goal and motivation for this wonderful artistic performance of NAKED! NAKED! will host the premiere of the highly anticipated debut of the new calendar, Bare Astrology, dedicated to the same celebration and awareness of rape and domestic violence. Happening Tuesday at 7:30. Grab the full program for the Art of Social Justice Conference here. For more info, visit http://www.bareastrology.yolasite.com.

Preview: Discovering Your Personal Art Form, Enacting Social Justice Naturally

April 6, 2012 Leave a comment

This workshop will examine how our life circumstances can not be labeled or seen as something that is bad or good, but as the very elements that allow us to refine ourselves into a work of art. Through simple exercises, we will discuss how one finds their own personal way to make one’s life a living art form, and set intentions for going forward into the future this way. Lastly, we will discuss how in living our life as art, we naturally enact social justice within the world around us. Led by Lynsie Buteyn, Wednesday April 11th at the Art of Social Justice Conference.
