This workshop will introduce the ongoing legacy of state repression in the United States and the political prisoners that have been claimed by it. The workshop will begin with the labor movement of the Industrial Revolution, the Pinkerton Detective Agency, and the early formation of Federal Bureau of Investigation. It will then cover the social movements of “the 60’s” and the FBI’s Counter-Intelligence Program aimed at neutralizing those movements. The third case study covered will be the Green Scare and the FBI’s campaign to neutralize contemporary environmental movements. To conclude, the workshop will touch on the “War on Terror” attack on Muslim communities and other current manifestations of state repression.
